I realized that since all of my students are well-connected on the internet, it may make sense for me to use the a blog as the main platform of communication. We'll try this out for the time being and see how well this works. (Btw, this is how many universities operate).
I still can't assess KM, and when I can, I'll see if that's a viable alternative.
